I have been rereading two of my favorite novels over the last couple of days. I love these books for their look at art, being true to your art and the struggles of a religious person to make art that is meaningful beyond their religious community. They are:
- My Name is Asher Lev
- The Gift of Asher Lev
The author is Chiam Potok.
While I do not agree with all of the positions that are taken on the sources and importance of art, I do find them thought provoking. I do think that an artist needs to be engaged in a continuing discussion with themselves about their work and how they feel about it. This kind of self examination is, in my mind, what makes the difference in the quality and consistency of the work. Not that it is a guarantee, but I am pretty sure that without it, comes a slide into cliche.
